FUSE Corps is a national nonprofit that enables local government to more effectively address the most pressing challenges facing urban communities. In pursuit of this mission, FUSE runs an executive-level fellowship program in civic innovation that is focused on accelerating cross-sector collaboration and community-based problem solving. FUSE partners with city leaders to identify key strategic challenges and then recruits entrepreneurial professionals from the private sector who spend a year working in local government to address those challenges. FUSE fellows are uniquely positioned to achieve transformative impact across issue areas such as education, health, social services, economic development, public safety, and the environment.
Since FUSE was founded in San Francisco five years ago, this unique program has grown quickly in response to mounting demand from cities across the country. The current cohort includes 30 projects in governments throughout California (Sacramento, Vallejo, San Francisco, San José, Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles) and nationwide (Seattle, Pittsburgh and New Orleans). The response from prospective fellows has been equally robust, as FUSE received more than 1,000 applications last summer from private sector executives seeking to serve in this prestigious program. Over the coming five years, FUSE will continue to expand toward placing 100 fellows annually across 25 cities and widely communicating the impact of our work. This growth is being generously supported by a coalition of foundations including the Omidyar Network, James Irvine Foundation, an Anonymous supporter and the Kresge Foundation.
FUSE is at an exciting stage in its organizational development – one that is characterized by a rapidly growing national program. As FUSE continues to develop its systems and processes, the organization is seeking to hire a graduate-level Summer Associate to help analyze current business practices and help create strategic plans for expanding the organization’s capacity over time.
In particular, FUSE is planning to bring its recruitment practices in-house next year, following several years of having outsourced that function to external partners. The success of this effort will require a careful study of the total work hours currently required to complete each aspect of the recruitment, interviewing, and selection processes, as well as the experience levels required for each of the various responsibilities within the team. Further complicating this analysis is the need to successfully plan for another important upcoming shift in FUSE’s planned operations – moving from a single annual program toward two overlapping cohorts that each start their yearlong fellowships six months apart. As opposed to the current seasonal structure of recruiting only between May and September, this change will result in an essentially year-round state of perpetual recruiting and selection.
The Summer Associate will help FUSE design a new staff-driven recruitment function that will increase both the efficiency and effectiveness of one of FUSE’s core organizational operations, while also scaling up capacity over time to meet the program’s continually growing needs. This role will report directly to the Director of Programs and collaborate closely with the organization’s COO and other FUSE leaders.
