FUSE Corps is a national nonprofit that partners with local governments to help urban communities thrive. With offices in Boston and San Francisco, we work with cities and counties throughout the country on issues such as economic and workforce development, income inequality, housing, healthcare, justice reform, public safety, climate resilience, education, transportation, and infrastructure. Our approach is based on an executive fellowship program designed to provide local government with the additional leadership capacity to accelerate civic innovation and cross-sector collaboration. We closely collaborate with government partners to design yearlong projects that have clear and ambitious deliverables. We then conduct a national executive search for each unique position in order to recruit experienced professionals with the potential to achieve transformational impact in those roles. By helping to craft public policy, roll out new initiatives, and improve existing services, FUSE Executive Fellows help governments to better serve their community members.
Since the organization was founded eight years ago, it has placed more than 150 fellows in 20 cities, including Seattle, San Francisco, Oakland, San José, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Denver, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. The average FUSE Executive Fellow has a graduate degree and more than 20 years of professional experience, often at the senior levels of Fortune 500 companies, and they are dedicated to making a permanent shift toward an impact-oriented career. The FUSE program model prioritizes diversity and inclusion, with cohorts that average 60% professionals of color, 55% women, and 30% immigrants. After their fellowship year, more than 50% of alumni have continued to work in civic leadership, and 90% of our partner government agencies have returned each year with requests to host additional fellows.
During the past five years, FUSE has grown 10X in terms of fellowships placed annually, government partners, geographic distribution, alumni, staff, and operating budget. This growth has been fueled by a social enterprise business model that is based primarily on fee-for-service government contracts, with earned income currently covering 75% of our operating budget. Over the next several years, FUSE will continue this trajectory as we work to double the scale and impact of our work nationally. We are also working to expand FUSE’s publishing, storytelling, and knowledge sharing efforts in order to help inspire a much broader community of civic leaders. Ultimately, our efforts will enable communities to work more effectively, collaboratively, and resiliently in response to established and emerging challenges.

At this exciting time in the organization’s continuing growth trajectory, FUSE seeks an experienced fundraising professional to serve as its first Director of Development. Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with others throughout the organization, the Director will significantly expand FUSE’s relationships with national foundations as well as local funders in the various cities in which the program operates. By diversifying our community of strategic funding partners, the Director will accelerate FUSE’s nationwide expansion and help ensure our long-term sustainability.
In addition to the full spectrum of traditional development responsibilities (prospecting, outreach, cultivation, proposal writing, relationship management, report writing, etc.), the Director will help lead several specific campaigns including:
- PLANNING: Develop an overall fundraising strategy that leverages existing relationships and identifies opportunities for pursuing and establishing new relationships. Conduct research on wide array of local and national funders to identify a list of prospects to be cultivated both immediately and over time. Work closely with the CEO, leadership team, Board members, other staff, and specific fellows and alumni to incorporate various perspectives on the proposed targets and approaches for the coming year.
- GROWTH CAPITAL: Four years ago, FUSE conducted its first growth capital campaign and raised $6M, primarily from three major funders. These funds enabled FUSE to grow from a $1M organization to a $10M organization that is principally funded through an earned income model. This year, we launched our second growth capital campaign, with a goal of raising $10M by 2021. Having secured the first $4M through anchor investments, the Director will work closely with the CEO to cultivate major investor prospects and achieve the campaign’s goals within the next two years.
- MULTI-FELLOW UNDERWRITING: While the majority of FUSE fellows are funded individually by our government partners, we have had increasing success identifying funders who will consider 6-to-7 figure grants in order to underwrite an entire group of fellows working on a common set of projects across various cities. The Director will work with the CEO and Strategic Partnerships Team (which manages the development of all fellowship projects) to pursue opportunities for additional funding of this kind. Additionally, the Director will explore innovative new ways of funding fellowship projects through partnerships with nonprofits, foundations, individuals, state and federal government, think tanks, universities, corporations, etc.
- LOCAL FUNDING: Even as FUSE continues to grow our sources of earned income, there will continue to be an annual need for $1-2M in general support to help fund various aspects of our work and ongoing efforts around program development. To meet this need, the Director will build relationships with community foundations and other local funders throughout the primary cities in which FUSE has scaled up its program work. This work will center around aligning foundation program areas with the issues on which local fellows are working (e.g. education, opportunity youth, workforce training, healthcare access, justice reform, environmental issues).
- Passion for and commitment to FUSE’s mission and a belief in the power of cross-sector collaboration and civic innovation to positively impact society’s biggest challenges.
- 10+ years of leadership experience in roles with direct experience securing philanthropic support from local and national foundations and high net worth individuals.
- Professional, organized and self-motivated person with strong attention to detail.
- Highly-developed relationship-building skills and the ability to establish positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with an understanding of how to adjust message for a variety of audiences and an ability to effectively communicate the compelling nature of a partnership opportunity to governments and foundations.
- Effective networker, spokesperson, and relationship builder with demonstrated success engaging with partners, clients, funders, and other stakeholders.
- Highly strategic mindset, including the demonstrated ability to develop and execute plans for growth, with a proven track record of achieving goals.
- A collaborative and respectful working style that focuses on teamwork and building a strong culture.
- Ability to travel regularly in support of the organization and its goals, potentially including travel across the United States up to 30% annually. Most travel dates will be entirely flexible and can be scheduled based on the Director’s availability.
