Spurring Community-Oriented Redevelopment in Indianapolis’s Far Eastside

Indianapolis’s Far Eastside neighborhood, which has experienced poverty and unemployment, is the target of a group of civic, community, and philanthropic leaders who want revitalize the neighborhood. Plans include repurposing public buildings, such as a recently closed high school, for community use, and investing in new rapid transit for the community.

FUSE executive fellow Lisa Marie Gala will research best practices in other cities that have revitalized neighborhoods with similar programs, and identify development opportunities with key stakeholders. She will create a redevelopment strategy, working with civic and community partners, and help guide and manage the project. By spurring redevelopment, the group aims to revitalize the neighborhood, while lowering crime and improving quality of life.
